On November 30th, The Most Beautiful Art Tour in Alberta showcases a community of art galleries and studios across the foothills, and is a great way to fill a fall day!
Your first stop takes place at the Leighton Art Centre, the historic heritage home which now serves an art gallery, museum, education, and all-Canadian gallery shop. Situated on 80 acres and featuring a spectacular view of the foothills and Rocky Mountains, there’s no better way to start your day.
Back on the road, you’ll be headed south and aiming for the top of a large foothill in the cool little town of Turner Valley. Upon ascent, you’ll find an incredible view and the studio of Susan Kristoferson. Specializing in unique hand dyed and painted papers, Susan creates complex collage paintings and unique objects that have been shown in more than 200+ exhibits, and in collections across the US, Japan and Canada.
Watching for wildlife, head back down the hill towards the studio of Mady-Thiel Kopstein. As you’ll see, Mady’s style ranges from abstract to impressionistic – or just straight from the heart. This foothills artist specializes in southern Alberta landscapes, abstracts, animals, ravens, and flowers is oft-inspired by her local landscape and has sold pieces worldwide.
For your fourth stop, head out the south end of Turner Valley and towards a view you won’t soon forget.
Here, the work of David Barnes is showcased at his studio Eversfield Ceramics. This exceptional potter and sculptor has seen his work featured throughout many exhibitions, museums, and galleries across the world.
Upon leaving, take in the view one more time and then head north to the cool little town of Black Diamond. This tour's fifth stop is the incredible Firebrand Studios, where artists Julia Reimer and Tyler Rock create internationally collected glassworks. Watch a glassblowing demonstration or browse the studio and its selection of glassworks, awards, and custom pieces.
Not far away, downtown Black Diamond hosts our next stop in the Bluerock Gallery. Located in the heart of this eclectic town, this gem of a destination art gallery features fine art and crafts in all mediums. With work from more than 200 regional artists on display, you’ll also find it the home of many unique pieces.
With Lineham House Galleries in Okotoks as your next stop, head east on Hwy 7 and keep an eye out for the Okotoks Erratic on the left to know you’re getting close to your final two stops. Arriving at the heart of Old Towne Okotoks, this historic house on Elma Street is a destination space brimming with work from local artists and artisans. There are a few floors to check out, mind the old staircase but the climb is worth it.
Also in Old Towne Okotoks, you’ll end your day not too far down the road at the Okotoks Art Gallery. Reflecting a wealth of creativity and dynamic energy, this incredible gallery is housed within the historic 1929 CPR Railway Station and is always hosting incredible exhibits or educational displays.
Since you’re already here, might as well make plans to have dinner a restaurant in Okotoks. There are many choices, and none of them are bad.
