Wine, spirit and Christmas BEER?

Posted on: Nov 25, 2020

It must be something in the water because the Foothills are home to more than our fair share of brewers, distillers, meaderies and wine makers. Join us on a virtual trip around the region and choose your adventure. Do you drive out for a tasting, take home a sampling from your local liquor merchant or order online from one of our award-winning locations? The choice is yours but do make sure you take a sip from at least one of these fine creators of beer, wine, mead or spirits.

Spirit Hills Flower Winery – A family farm turned winery with strong European traditions, Spirit Hills is a unique and unexpected find in the hills south of Millarville. Touted as the Napa of the Foothills, their stunning winery and tasting room are a haven for connoisseurs and those new to Alberta wines. Learn about the bees, Rocky Mountain wildflowers, honey harvesting, wine making and bottling all while sampling their one-of-a-kind flower wines. Order Spirit Hills products here.

Eau Claire Distillery – the Foothills' own Farm to Glass distillery, Eau Clair Distillery is home to outstanding, locally made spirits. Award winning and world renowned with good reason, their products are exquisite. Find them online, at their location in Turner Valley or at fine merchants throughout the province. Their tasting room is open seven days a week from 11 to 5, and a must stop on the Cowboy Trail.

Brauerei Fahr – Over the past year, Brauerei Fahr in Turner Valley, home of the best Hefeweizen in the world, has won four World Beer Awards. Celebrated internationally and adored locally, this small brewery focuses on perfection and quality. If true brewed German beer is your weakness, then Fahr is the only place you need to seek out.

Hard Knox – Outstanding suds await from this unpretentious and energetic bunch at Hard Knox Brewery. Here, each beer tells a story and most of their stories end in another round. Try the ever-popular Dusty Trail IPA or the Hoof Hearted dark lager. Say that second name fast for a good laugh. Hard Knox beers are available in stores or in the comfortable tap room.

Hub Town – The newest brewery on the Foothills scene is Hub Town in Okotoks. Makers of more than two dozen beers and a handful of ciders, this community minded, family-run show is in the middle of it all in downtown Okotoks. For the homebodies, they offer a weekly beer delivery; think an ice cream truck but for adults. Their online store is extensive and the beer is always great.

Chinook Arch Meadery – Sometimes called honey wine, sometimes nectar of the gods, mead is an ancient beverage made from fermented honey. Here in the Foothills we have the award-winning Chinook Honey Meadery to keep our glasses full. With more than a dozen different flavours to choose from, it won't be easy picking just one on their online shop. If a lesson in mead is what you're after, a trip out to the Chinook Honey Country Store may be in order.

Tippa Inc. Distillery – a micro, micro distillery out of Okotoks, Tippa only works in small batches. Try their handcrafted Lovebird Gin, a refined and very smooth gin that is happy in any martini. Produced in a gluten free facility, Tippa is an environmentally responsible nano distiller. Distiller Paul Poutanen is of Finnish descent and Tippa means drop in Finnish. Visit their online store for all their products.

High River Brewing Company – a community-minded brewery with some outstanding beers, this is High River's brewery. With four core beers and and arsenal of seasonal and experimental brews, you will never be bored here.

Six Corners Brew Works – technically brewed outside of the Foothills, Six Corners does call the Foothills home. They are working hard to construct their new facility in Okotoks. In the meantime, they are focussed on contract brewing to keep the suds flowing, which means you get to enjoy their delicious beer without having to wait. Pick up Six Corners' delightful products at many fine liquor stores throughout the Foothills and in Calgary or get right into the experience with some swag from their online store.
