Foothills Faces – Kristen Hall, The Hive Nanton

Name: Kristen Hall

Hometown: Alliston, Ontario

Business and job title: The Hive in Nanton and I am the Owner

A bit about you: We started The Hive almost a year ago so that we could showcase multiple vendors in one location. We have another business called Bee My Honey and we were looking for a place to sell our honey. We knew that we wouldn’t be interesting enough just on our own, but figured that working together was the way to do it.

Sitting still isn’t really my thing. It actually gives me anxiety, so I always find something to do! I have young children, and do my best to put any additional time and effort back into the community when possible. I currently sit on the Nanton and District Chamber of Commerce as the Vice President, and I am on the Board for the Nanton Quality of Life Foundation. When I’m not working or volunteering, I am usually out checking bees, cleaning the house or working on the yard. The children are usually with me during all these endeavors!

Best part of the job? My most favourite part of the job is interacting with people. I really do love people, and I love seeing people come together especially in a time like this!

What do you love most about the Foothills? As a child my family was always moving, and it wasn’t until we moved to Nanton that I really felt like home. There really is a sense of community, and when you pair that with all of the beautiful landscapes, you really can’t go wrong.

Tips for tourists: We have just over 200 vendors in one location, so to really enjoy and admire all of the hard work, make sure you give yourself enough time. Once you are done visiting our store, make sure you check out all the other businesses in Nanton too!

Funniest on-the-job story? We are currently working on turning our public washroom into a piece of art, and after having many negative experiences and not being able to use washrooms at other public places, we are trying to make everything about our washroom accessible and welcoming. Everyone here jokes that my favourite question is “Do you have a public washroom?”, but it really is! We had a gentleman come in and ask to use the washroom, and without hesitation, I said “Yes!! Absolutely. Please let me know if I can help in any way.” You should’ve seen the look that he gave me! We all had a good laugh after that. I definitely mixed up my words. We have a lot of fun down here and we are always open to new ideas!
